Spotify Messages

Chat and share music, podcasts, audiobooks, and more directly with friends and family in the Spotify app.

Getting started

Messaging someone on Spotify is easy. You can either share Spotify content or start a new chat.

  • You can share songs, playlists, albums, audiobooks, podcast episodes, artists, live events, and countdown pages.

    1. Tap Share Share on Android (Android)/ Share on iOS (iOS).
    2. Select a friend from your suggested list or send an invite link. Note: You can select up to 10 people.

    Note: If it's your first time sharing content with someone, they get a message request and can choose to accept, block, or delete it.

    1. Tap your profile picture.
    2. Under Messages, tap New message.

    Note: If it's your first time messaging someone, they get a message request and can choose to accept, block, or delete it.

  • You can create group messages with up to 10 friends.

    1. Tap your profile picture.
    2. Scroll to Messages.
    3. Tap Create group.
    4. Choose friends from your suggested list.
    5. Tap Create group again to confirm.

    Note: You can also create group messages from the sharing menu by selecting multiple friends before sending.

    Managing group messages

    The person who creates the group becomes the admin. Group members have roles such as:

    • Admin - Can add or remove members
    • Participant - Regular member
    • Pending - Invited but hasn't joined yet
    • Blocked - User blocked by the admin or participants

    Note: Members who leave or are removed from the group won’t see messages sent while they are away.

Finding and managing your chats

    1. Tap your profile picture.
    2. Scroll to Messages. Your recent chats show right below.
    3. Tap Show all to see more.
  • For: Individual chats

    1. Open the chat.
    2. Tap the header showing the person's name and profile picture.
    3. Tap 3 horizontal dots next to the person.
    4. Select Delete chat.

    You’ll no longer see the chat in Messages.

    Notes:

    • We won’t notify the other participant or remove the chat from their view
    • The conversation will reappear if you message each other again
  • You can delete messages in your chat to remove them from your view.

    Delete a message you received

    1. Open the chat.
    2. Tap and hold on the message.
    3. Select Delete for you.

    Delete a message you sent

    1. Open the chat.
    2. Tap and hold on your message.
    3. Select Delete.

    Tip: You can also delete your last 4 sent messages in the chat from everyone’s view.

Managing your message notifications

To control notifications for Spotify Messages:

  1. Tap your profile picture.
  2. Select Settings and privacy.
  3. Tap Notifications.
  4. Tap Social features.
  5. Select Messages, then you can turn the switch on Toggle switched on or off Toggle switched off.

FAQ

  • We suggest people you've interacted with before on Spotify. You’ll see people available to message if you:

    • Have shared content with each other before (like a song, podcast, or audiobook)
    • Created a Blend or collaborative playlists together
    • Were in a recent Jam together
    • Currently share a Family or Duo plan

    If you can’t find someone listed, you can send them a link instead via other apps. Once they open the link, they’ll start showing under your list of suggestions.

  • To block someone from messaging you:

    1. Open the chat.
    2. Tap the header showing the person's name and profile picture.
    3. Tap 3 horizontal dots next to the person.
    4. Select Block user.
    5. Confirm by tapping Block again.

    To unblock, repeat the steps above and tap Unblock. You can also block a user from their profile.

    You can manage all blocked users via Settings and privacy > Privacy and social > Blocked users.

    Note: Spotify Messages are private between participants but are not encrypted.

  • If you’d prefer not to use Spotify Messages:

    1. Tap your profile picture.
    2. Tap Settings and privacy.
    3. Select Privacy and social.
    4. Scroll to Social features.
    5. Toggle Messages off Toggle switched off.
