Age restricted content and checking your age

Spotify is testing age assurance technologies in select markets, utilizing our own internal age estimation technology and partnering with Yoti, a trusted digital identity company. This technology helps us identify if users are eligible to access some Spotify content and features.

This means that you may have to confirm your age by going through an age assurance process. For example, if you attempt to watch a music video that has been labelled 18+ by the rightsholder for that video, Spotify may serve a prompt to confirm your age.

For more information on our partnership with Yoti, visit our Safety and Privacy center.

Who has to do an age check?

Certain users will be asked to confirm their age by going through an age assurance process. This is to ensure you are eligible for age-restricted features.

Tap Continue and follow the on screen steps to do the age check.

When will I be asked to complete an age check?

You may be presented with an age check when you try to access certain age restricted content and features, like music videos tagged 18+.

Tap Continue and follow the on screen steps to do the age check.

How does the age check work?

You may be asked to perform an age check to ensure you are eligible for age-restricted features. You can do this by going through our facial age check. If this shows inaccurate results, you can always correct that with an ID verification.

  • When prompted to, enable camera access and take a photo of yourself following the in-app instructions.

Once you’ve taken a photo of your face using your mobile device, we use Yoti’s face-scanning technology integrated into the Spotify app to estimate your age.

We only use your photo to estimate your age, and it is encrypted to help keep it secure. After the age check is complete, Yoti will delete all users' data. Spotify will use the results of the process to improve our ability to provide an age-appropriate experience to all of our users.

For more information about how we process your personal data, see our Privacy Policy.

If your estimated age is incorrect, you can use the ID verification to confirm your accurate age.

  • You can proceed to the ID verification directly in the flow, if the facial age estimation process shows that you’re not old enough for the age restricted content and features you are trying to access.

Alternatively, you can always perform the ID verification by going to your settings:

    1. Tap your profile picture at the top.
    2. Tap Settings and privacy .
    3. Tap Account.
    4. Tap Age Check.

From here, follow the on-screen instructions to perform the ID verification.

For more information about how we process your personal data, see our Privacy Policy.

Note: We accept most types of ID documents available in your country.

What happens after I encounter the age check?

Scenario

Information

I'm over the age requirement for the feature

Great! You’ll be able to use the feature (like watching an 18+ music video) and keep using Spotify as normal.

I'm under the age requirement for the feature but still old enough to use Spotify

No problem! You can still use Spotify, but you won’t be able to access the age-restricted feature.
For example, if you're 17 and try to watch a video that's marked 18+, it won’t play.

Also, if you skip the age check, you won’t get access to that content, but the rest of Spotify will still work just fine as long as you're old enough for your country.

Not old enough to use Spotify

If the age check shows that you're under the minimum age for Spotify in your country, your account will be deactivated and then deleted.

We’ll send you an email if this happens, and you’ll have a short window to verify your age with ID if it was a mistake.

My age check shows I’m not old enough to use Spotify

You cannot use Spotify if you don’t meet the minimum age requirements for the market you’re in. If you cannot confirm you’re old enough to use Spotify, your account will be deactivated and eventually deleted.

My age check wasn’t accurate?

If you have tried the facial age estimation process but the estimate wasn’t right, you can verify your age using ID instead. See the ID verification section above for more information.

My account was deactivated, what should I do?

If your account was deactivated due to an inaccurate age estimation, you can look for the email in your inbox which allows you to reactivate your account within 90 days of deactivation and then go through ID verification. If we still can’t confirm you’re old enough to use Spotify, or if no action is taken within 7 days of reactivation, your account will be permanently deleted.
