Start or join a Jam

Friends who join a Jam can listen and add songs to the queue together, whether in-person or virtually.

Note: Premium is needed to start and host a Jam. Free users can join and add songs to a Jam hosted by a Premium user, allowing for in-person Jams. This feature works also with smart speakers and most Bluetooth speakers.

Start and share a Jam

    1. Tap 3 horizontal dots or right-click on a track or playlist.
    2. Tap Start a Jam.
    3. Tap Invite.
      Here you can share a QR code, or tap Share link and send it to your friends.
    1. Tap Connect device from the device you’re playing on, or tap from your favorite public playlist.
    2. Tap Start a Jam.
    3. Tap Invite. Here you can share a QR code, or tap Share link and send it to your friends. You can also bring your phones close together (by up to 1m) to get them to join the Jam if you’re logged in to Spotify and your Bluetooth is turned on.

    Tip: Spotify will automatically start a Jam when you’re connecting to a smart speaker or most Bluetooth speakers. Users on the same WiFi will receive an invitation to your Jam. If both you and others have Bluetooth permissions enabled, others will receive an invitation to your Jam by having their phone close to yours. You can disable this in the Connect Picker.

    1. Tap Connect device.
    2. Switch Let others Jam on this speaker on Toggle switched on.
  • Spotify on TV supports in-person Jams which means that playback happens on the TV speakers.

    1. Tap Play Queue Queue & Jam.
    2. Share the QR code, scan the QR code from the queue or the QR code notification, or ask your friends to scan the notification at the end of the track.
      Note: Dismiss the QR code notification by pressing back from your remote or gaming controls.

    To make any changes to the Jam you are hosting, tap Settings in the queue section. There you can control the following:

    • Let others change what’s playing
    • Let others change volume on supported devices
    • Automatically invite others to join a Jam on this device

    Tip: You don’t need to be on the same WiFi for Jam to work. However, if you’re on the same WiFi, network users will get a prompt in their Spotify app to join on the TV.

  • Spotify on Android Auto supports in-person Jams which means that playback happens on the car speakers.

    To start a Jam on Android Auto, you need:

    • Android Auto version 14.5 or above
    • Spotify app version 9.0.50 or above

    Start a Jam

    1. From your car’s Now Playing view, tap Jam.
    2. Ask your friends to join by scanning the QR code or enabling Bluetooth for Spotify.

    As the host, you can:

    • Tap View Guests to review or remove guests from the Jam
    • Tap Queue to see what’s playing next
    • Play, pause, skip tracks, and control the playback volume

    Note: Only the host can change the playback volume through the mobile app. However, anyone can control the volume through the car’s dial.

    Friends in the Jam can control the following through their mobile app:

    • Play, pause, and skip tracks
    • See and rearrange the play queue
    • Add songs through Search or choose from the Group Recommendations
  • Spotify on CarPlay supports in-person Jams which means that playback happens on the car speakers.

    1. From your car’s Now Playing view, tap Queue & Jam.
    2. Ask friends to join by scanning the QR code or enabling Bluetooth for Spotify.

    As the host, you can:

    • Tap View Guests to review or remove participants from the Jam
    • Expand the Jam details to manage guest participation
    • Scroll through the Jam screen to see what’s playing next

    Friends in the Jam can control the following through their mobile app:

    • Play, pause, and skip tracks
    • See and rearrange the play queue
    • Add songs through Search or choose from the Group Recommendations

Join and add tracks to the Jam

Anyone in a Jam can control what’s playing on the speaker.

  1. Tap on the invitation link sent to you by your friend,
    or scan the QR code,
    or bring your phones close together (by up to 1m) if you’re logged in on to Spotify and your Bluetooth is turned on.
  2. Choose between listening tracks remotely or in-person.
    Note: You need Premium to join a Jam remotely.
  3. Tap Join.
  4. Add tracks, or get started with Spotify recommendations that let you know if others in the Jam like those songs.

Add or remove friends from a Jam

To add someone to a Jam:

    1. Tap the Jam.
    2. Tap Invite.

    Here you can share a QR code, or tap Share link and send it to your friends.

    1. Tap the current device you’re listening on.
    2. Tap Invite.

    Here you can share a QR code, or tap Share link and send it to your friends. You can also bring your phones close together (by up to 1m) to get them to join the Jam if you’re logged in to Spotify and your Bluetooth is turned on.

    Tip: Friends in the same WiFi network will be invited to join the Jam without needing a host’s invitation.

To remove someone from a Jam:

    1. Tap the Jam.
    2. Tap Remove next to the name of the participant.

    1. Tap the current device you’re listening on.
    2. Tap Remove all participants.
      Or, tap 3 horizontal dots next to the participant and tap Remove from Jam.

Leave a Jam

  1. Tap the current device you’re listening on.
  2. Select a different device to play on in the available devices list.
    Or, tap Leave.

Note: If a host leaves, it’ll end the Jam for everyone.

Control volume in a Jam

The host of a Jam is able to toggle whether or not guests are able to control the volume.

The host can either:

  • Control the volume of the session by themselves, or
  • Share the volume control with all participants by enabling it manually:
    1. On your app, tap the current device you’re listening to.
    2. Switch Let guests change volume on Toggle switched on.

Shared volume control is supported on:

  • Chromecast
  • Amazon Cast

Shared volume control is unavailable on:

  • Bluetooth devices
  • Apple AirPlay

Control what’s playing in a Jam

The host of a Jam is able to toggle whether or not guests are able to control what’s playing.

When you toggle Let others change what’s playing off Toggle switched on, guests will only be able to add songs to the Jam.

Not working?

If ​​you’re unable to host a Jam, make sure:

  • You have an active Premium subscription
  • You’re connecting to the right speaker from the list of available devices

If you’re unable to join a Jam, check if:

  • You’ve accepted the invitation from the host of the Jam
  • You’re connecting to the right speaker from the list of available devices

If you’re unable to control the volume of the speaker in a Jam, check if:

  • Your speaker supports shared volume control
  • The host has enabled shared volume control in the Jam
