Student discount FAQ

It’s quick and easy to apply the student discount to your account. Just head to the Spotify student discount page and follow the instructions.

If you’re having trouble, don’t worry; we have some answers to common questions below:

Already have a Spotify subscription or a Premium trial?

After signing up for the student discount, the discounted rate will automatically begin on your next billing date. You can check the status of your subscription at any time.

Can I pay for the student discount with a Spotify gift/e-card?

It’s not currently possible to use a Spotify gift/e-card when signing up for student discount. You can use it to pay for an existing student discount subscription but it will be charged the full, non-discounted Premium rate.

How long does the discount last?

Your student discount is active for 12 months from the moment you apply it to your account. This is so Spotify can check your eligibility each academic year. After that, your account will revert to the standard Premium rate.

Don’t worry though! We automatically send you an email reminder when your discount is about to expire. If you’re still a student, you can reapply for an additional 12 months.

The verification of my student status failed, but I think I’m eligible.

We use the good folks at SheerID to verify your student credentials. If you’re having trouble signing up, you can submit for manual verification.

Note: This can take up to 12 hours to process.

You can also reach them on their website or tweet them @SheerID.

Note: After completing your enrollment as a student, it can take up to 28 days for your student credentials to be listed with the SheerID verification service.

I wasn’t upgraded to Premium, but I was still charged

If we’re unable to verify your student I.D, then unfortunately you won’t be eligible to claim the student discount. In this instance, any charges will show on your statement as ‘pending’. This means your bank has put a temporary authorization on the funds, but no money has actually been taken.

Once the bank confirms your student I.D failed to verify successfully, the money will reappear on your statement. This can take up to 48 hours, depending on your bank.
