Sort and filter Spotify to control how the music is listed and played. Pick an option and your device below for more information.

Sort

Reorganize how music is listed in the app.

Sort songs in playlists

Tip: This works for Songs in Your Library too!

  1. Click the column you want to sort by, for example:
    • Alphabetically, by TITLE, ARTIST, or ALBUM.
    • By most recently added, with .
    • By song duration, with .

      Note: Adjust the app's screen size to reveal more columns.
       
  2. Click the column again to reverse the order, click again to go back to the original order.

If you created the playlist, you can also drag and drop songs into your preferred position. Just click and hold a song to move it up or down.

Sort playlists in Your Library

To reorder your list of playlists in the menu on the left, just click and hold a playlist title to move it up or down.

You can also organize your playlists into folders:

  1. Right-click a playlist in the menu on the left of the desktop app.
  2. Select Create folder.
  3. Give it a name and press enter.
  4. Drag playlists to a folder. You can even create folders within folders.

Sort Albums and Artists in Your Library

Select Albums or Artists in the menu on the left, and choose a Sorted by option from the dropdown menu.

On the mobile and tablet app, you can sort:

  • Song listings within playlists. Either alphabetically by Title, Artist, or Album, or by Recently added.
     
  • Playlists, Songs, Artists, and Albums in Your Library. Either alphabetically by Name, Title, Album, or Artist, or by Recently played or Recently added. ​​​Sort options may vary depending on the list you’re sorting.

Here’s how:

  1. Go to the list you’d like to sort.
  2. Pull down and release to display  at the top. Tap it.
  3. Under Sort By, tap your preferred option.
  4. Repeat these steps to reverse the order or pick another sort option.

Tip: There’s also an option to sort by Custom. This is the list’s default view. If you created the list, you can manually reorder this. Check out the steps to sort songs and playlists for desktop above, or how to Create and edit playlists.

Filter

Choose to show only specific content within track lists.

With Filter on the desktop app, you can list specific content based on a search term in any playlist or Songs in Your Library.

  1. Select Filter at the top of track listings.
  2. Enter any search term, for example “baby”. Only titles, albums, or artists containing that term are now listed.
  3. To return to the original listing, either clear your search or click Remove filter.

Search playlists and their track listings, or Songs, Albums, and Artists in Your Library.

  1. Go to the list you’d like to filter.
  2. Pull the screen down to display Filter at the top.
  3. Enter a search term to show specific content, for example “baby”. Only titles, albums, or artists containing that term are now listed.
  4. To return to the original list, clear your search by tapping X.

You can also choose to list only Downloads or Imported Music (your local files) in Your Library:

  1. Tap Your Library  in the menu at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Tap Playlists, Songs, Albums, or Artists.
  3. Pull down and release to display  at the top. Tap it.
  4. Under Filter by, tap Downloads or Imported Music.
    Note: Filter options may vary depending on the list you’re filtering.
  5. To return to the original list, repeat these steps and tap the selected filter again.
