Group session on speaker
For: Premium on mobile and tablet. This feature works with smart speakers and most Bluetooth speakers.
Friends who join a session can control what plays on a speaker.
Start a group session on speaker
Note: Make sure your device and speaker are on the same WiFi network.
- Open Spotify and play something.
- Tap
and choose the device you want to play on.
Now multiple people can join and control this speaker.
Join a group session on speaker
Anyone in a group session can control what’s playing on the speaker. They can also invite and remove friends.
If you are on the same WiFi network, you can join the session without invitation.
- Tap
and select the speaker your friend is playing on.
- Tap Join session.
Note: If you choose Take over speaker, everyone else will be removed and their queue will be lost.
If you aren’t on the same WiFi network, the host or another participant can send you a QR code or a link with an invitation. Scan the QR code or use the link to join the session.
Add or remove friends from a group session on speaker
To add someone to the session:
- Tap the current device you’re listening on.
- Tap the arrow/avatar next to it.
Note: Make sure the group session on speaker is on.
- Tap Invite.
Here you can share a QR code, or tap Share as link to send your own way.
Tip: Friends in the same WiFi network can join the session without invitation.
To remove someone from the session:
- Tap the current device you’re listening on.
- Tap the arrow/profile picture next to it.
- Tap Remove all participants. Or, tap
next to the participant and tap Remove from session.
Leave a group session on speaker
- Tap the current device you’re listening on.
- Select a different device to play on in the available devices list.
Note: If a host leaves, it’ll end the session for everyone.
Control volume in a group session
When a group session has 3 or less participants, everyone in the session can control the volume of the speaker.
If more participants join, shared volume control is automatically disabled. The host can either:
- Control the volume of the session by themselves; or
- Share the volume control with all participants by enabling it manually:
1. On your app, tap the current device you’re listening to.
2. Switch Let guests change volume on.
Shared volume control is supported on:
- Chromecast
- Amazon Cast
Shared volume control is unavailable on:
- Bluetooth devices
- Apple AirPlay
Not working?
If you’re unable to join or start a group session on speaker, make sure that:
- You’re using mobile or tablet (this feature doesn’t work with desktop)
- Your device is connected to the same WiFi network as the speaker
- You have an active Premium subscription
- You’re connecting to the right speaker from the list of available devices
If you’re unable to control the volume of the speaker in a group session, check if:
- Your speaker supports shared volume control
- The host has enabled shared volume control in the session
