Can't play music
If the Spotify app isn’t behaving as it should, this guide should get you back to the beat.
Tip: If you’re having trouble playing your offline music, check out Listen offline troubleshooting.
Check if it’s a connection issue
- Error messages saying Spotify is offline or No internet connection detected.
- All tracks grayed out.
- Nothing happens when you click/tap play (or it briefly changes to the pause symbol before reverting back to the play symbol).
If so, try these steps:
- We recommend at least a 3/4G connection, but preferably WiFi.
- Make sure Spotify isn’t in offline mode.
- Turn your WiFi off. Wait 30 seconds, then switch it back on.
- Restart your router.
- Close any apps you’re not using.
- Check if your firewall (if you use one) has Spotify set as an exception.
Note: Some shared or public networks (e.g. schools/work/office) restrict access to certain services. You can contact those responsible for managing the network for more information. - If possible, try it with a different WiFi network. If it works with another connection, we recommend contacting the service provider of the original network for more information.
- If you’re using a data connection, check that you have enough data allowance.
Tip: We recommend using WiFi instead of a data connection.
If it’s not a connection issue
If you’re experiencing different error messages to those above or stuttered audio or no sound at all, try this:
- Log out and back in.
- Sign out everywhere. It’s possible your account is being used somewhere else, meaning it has paused on your current device.
- Close any apps you’re not using.
- Restart your device.
-
Reinstall the app.
Note: If you have music downloaded for offline listening, you need to download it again after reinstalling.
Still not working?
Check your device
- Check that Spotify isn't playing on another device with Spotify Connect.
- Check that the correct audio output is selected in your device’s volume settings. You can refer to the manufacturer for help with volume settings.
Tip: Using Windows? Click the speaker icon in the task bar and select Mixer. Spotify has its own volume channel here. Check that the level is high and isn’t muted. - Is your audio hardware functioning properly? Try playing from an alternative source or device.
- Streaming could be affected if you have less than 1 GB of available memory. You may want to delete some unnecessary files and apps.
- Check that your device is fully up-to-date, including its operating system and any other software.
Tip: For computers, it’s worth checking your soundcard driver software. You can refer to your device’s manufacturer for help with this. - Ensure your device meets Spotify’s system requirements.
- If you’re playing to a device remotely, check out Spotify’s supported connection types.
Check the app
- Check that the app is up-to-date.
- Check @SpotifyStatus for any ongoing issues.
